Off and Running is an American coming-of-age story. But it is one shaped by the new realities of an increasingly diverse American population, especially as those realities affect family life. Brooklyn teen Avery Klein-Cloud is the African-American adoptive daughter of white Jewish lesbians. Her siblings, also adopted, are an older black and Puerto Rican boy and a young Korean-American boy. Avery has grown up loved, supported and happy. A group of eight teens from Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos, CA, participated in a service trip to Costa Rica where they built roads in urban San Jose alongside Costa Rican Jewish teens and helped to build a trail in the indigenous village of Yorkin.
The youth shot and edited this documentary with the assistance of Tricia Creason-Valencia, documentary filmmaker (flacafilms.com).

The 2009 Race and Judaism Symposium at Temple University was devoted to themes in memory of Dr. Gary Tobin, the President of the Institute for Jewish Research and Community, who died on July 6, 2009. Tobin, with his wife Diane, also founded Be’chol Lashon/In Every Tongue, a think–tank devoted to the study of Jewish diversity and bringing diverse communities of Jewish people together across the globe.
